Second, God’s holiness means he is incomparable. Perhaps an even more accurate definition of the word “holy” would be the phrase ‘a cut above something.’ When we find a garment or another piece of merchandise that is outstanding, that has a superior excellence, we use the expression that it is ‘a cut above the rest.’ This means that the one who is holy is uniquely holy, with no rivals or competition. There is no-one like him. No-one can say that any other god comes close. The glory of this God isn’t confined to a territory, but fills the whole earth. Some other passages state this more explicitly.
For example, Exodus 15:11:
Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?
And Psalm 86:8-10
Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. All the nations you have made will come and worship before you O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. For you are great and do marvellous deeds; you alone are God.
This God is matchless. There is no competition: he has a monopoly on god-ness. He is in a class of his own.
